Westmount designated as Historically Significant Community

The Government of Canada has designated Westmount and three other communities as historically significant places in Canada. The announcement was made on January 17, 2012 by the Honorable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment.

Draft Garbage Management By-Law tabled

A new draft by-law on garbage and waste management was tabled at the Council meeting of October 3, 2011 and a public information meeting was held December 1, 2011 to present the contents prior to its adoption in 2012.

The object of the new by-law is to replace the existing Garbage By-Law No. 884 to deal with recyclable materials, organic waste and domestic hazardous waste.

The text of the draft by-law is available at Westmount City Hall, 4333 Sherbrooke Street West or by clicking here.Westmount residents are invited to attend a public information session concerning the proposed new by-law on waste. The object of the new by-law is to replace the existing Garbage By-Law No. 884 to deal with recyclable materials, organic waste and domestic hazardous waste.

Snow Removal in Westmount: Everyone has a role to play!

Westmount depends on the cooperation of all drivers to ensure that snow is removed quickly and efficiently throughout the winter. Whenever you park, look up and check carefully for orange signs. Vehicles blocking snow removal operations will be towed.

2012 Facility Membership Cards now available

Sports Facility Membership Cards for the 2012 calendar year are now for sale at the Sports and Recreation office at the Westmount Arena, as well as Victoria Hall. Please note that a valid Sports Facility Membership Card is required for general skating and pick-up hockey at the Westmount Arena.

Electricity Consumption Intense Cold Weather

Bicycle Path: Winter Conditions

The De Maisonneuve bicycle path will remain open during the 2011-2012 winter season, except periodically during construction work or snow removal operations. Users of the path are asked to pay particular attention to signage during these periods, to check www.westmount.org for advisories or to follow on Twitter at (@westmount_cycle).

THE MAYOR'S COMMENTS ON THE FINANCIAL POSITION OF THE CITY OF WESTMOUNT COUNCIL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 7TH, 2011

Councillors, Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening:

As the first formal step in the 2012 budget preparation and adoption process, I am required by law to report to residents on the general financial health of our City.

In August, Council established the following guidelines for the 2012 budget :

Limit the increase in taxation for local services to inflation (2%) + 1%, including absorbing the effects of debt and pension plans.

Continue efforts to increase revenue from sources other than property taxes to balance the budget.

Our financial picture for 2011 looks favourable at this pont with both revenues and expenses projected at $ 91.5 million after appropriations, or with a modest surplus.
