Kitchen and Garden Waste Collection
In May 2009 Westmount completed the implementation of its door-to-door residential collection of kitchen and garden waste.
Each single-family home and apartment building with eight units or less received a green bin, a comprehensive information package and a free supply of compostable liner bags.
Kitchen and garden waste makes up as much as 40% of the contents of a garbage bag. These materials can be composted and should not be sent to a landfill.
Residents are encouraged to collect organic waste including vegetable and fruit peels, bread, pasta, rice, meat, fish, and other food items, as well as leaves, grass trimmings and plants. The contents of the green bin are collected once a week and transported to a specialized composting facility. The finished compost will be used as a soil amendment and fertilizer.
The materials are picked up once a week; in the eastern section of Westmount, collections are on Mondays; in the western section on Tuesdays. There is no kitchen and garden waste collection on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays or weekends, nor on the following public holidays: June 24th (St-Jean Baptiste Day), December 25th (Christmas Day) and January 1st (New Year's Day).
Green bins remain the property of the city and must be left in the home when you move. New residents requiring a green bin should contact Public Works at 514-989-5390.
