Do your part
- Warm up your car by driving it. The greatest amount of tailpipe pollutants are released during the “cold start” phase, or the first few minutes it takes a car to warm up. Since a car warms up faster when it is moving, the most efficient and environmentally safe way to warm it up is to drive it.
- Whenever possible, carpool, take public transportation, ride a bike or walk.
- Use block heaters when the temperature drops below 0° degrees.
- Use clean fuels, when available. Clean fuels include reformulated gasoline, oxygenated gasoline and alternative fuels.
- Purchase less polluting cars, such as low-emission and alternatively fueled vehicles.
- Follow your car manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, especially regarding tune ups and oil changes. Keep tires inflated to required pressure and front-end aligned. Poorly maintained or malfunctioning vehicles can release as much as 10 times the emissions of a well-maintained one.
- Drive sensible. Avoid “jack rabbit” starts and stops.
- Avoid high speeds, as they result in greater emissions. Higher emissions mean lower engine efficiency and lower kilometers per gallon, which cost you money. Also, you will get 15% better mileage driving 90 km versus 110 km.
