EIGHT WESTMOUNT ARTISTS FEATURED IN SUMMER EXHIBITION

The Gallery at Victoria Hall is pleased to feature eight artists in its summer group exhibition in what has come to be a well-attended tradition at the Westmount gallery.

Over fifty works of art are on display, from miniature watercolours measuring five by seven inches to large format photography and oil painting. The eight artists include Vedanta Balbahadur, Anne Chisholm, Marina Etingin, Jennifer Goddard, Jane McKenzie, Ann Pearson, Joanne Wallace, and Nancy Wyndowe-Hyde. Their styles range widely from abstraction to figuration. The exhibition runs from July 12th to August 11th, 2012.

Ann Pearson’s photographs of forests, trees or intimate views of individual leaves present an ephemeral beauty; the adroitly-blurred images suggest a heightened sense of the passage of time, as if we are viewing them from a fast moving train. Vedanta Balbahadur’s large panoramas of scenes from India reference both its cultural past and industrial present in delicately balanced compositions that often emphasize areas of saturated colour against an almost bleached white background.

Nancy Wyndowe-Hyde’s oil paintings of evening gowns, lushly yet delicately rendered, are both exquisite and edgy; the gowns float in empty enigmatic monochromatic fields, like cutouts from a child’s colouring book. Similarly, Jennifer Goddard focuses on a disembodied article of clothing, her grandmother’s glove; both the oversize charcoal gestural sketches and the more realistic oil paintings visually explore and investigate this family heirloom in a resonant way.

Marina Etingin’s expressive portraits of men and women capture a range of emotional gestalts and personalities with an expert use of nuanced colour and lively confident brushwork. The three abstract expressionist paintings by Joanne Wallace exude a strong graphic sensibility and bold energetic brushwork such that the patterns of interacting colour push against the edges of the paper as if seeking release.

In contrast, Anne Chisholm’s delicate realistic renderings of landscape scenes or figures of small children against an expansive body of water suggest the stilled moment, a sense of quiet reverie. A sense of almost spiritual stillness also pervades the two small paintings on board by Jane McKenzie; the artist’s subtle palette and attention to detail, such as the intricate interlacing of whitened tree branches, further underlines and draws us into the quiet harmony of her work.
